All she wanted was control.
Diet after diet.
Gym membership after gym membership.
Class after class.
Pills, surgery, getting her jaw wired shut (twice).
Desperate attempts to control her weight by controlling her eating.
Because, IF she could control her weight, then no one could see her pain.
When she was in control, it was NOT fun.
When she was having fun, she was NOT in control.
What a nasty dilema.
It's not like this for everyone.
Weight gain and loss is a completely normal process of the body's ability to store energy for later use.
It's not a moral issue.
Excess fat is NOT a sign of pain in-and-of-itself.
However, for those of us that have tied our self-esteem, value, and self-worth to their ability to control their weight, it's almost overwhelming.
One day, this woman noticed a change in my relationship with my body and with food.
She noticed a softening of emotion.
An acceptance of how the body changes.
But also, a desire and willingness to be intentional and thoughtful with what I ate.
It was the first time she really noticed that these two seemingly different parts could come together.
There is a way to have fun AND be in control.
But how?
She knew I had been practicing hypnotherapy for some time.
But she "tried that before" and it didn't work.
I just smiled. Convincing with words seldom works. Then she did what all people stuck in a negative belief do... she tried to tell me all the reasons she is outside of help, how this would never work for her, how hypnosis is just brainwashing... etc...
Then one day, she looked at me and said, "maybe my brain needs a little washing."
Amen.
There is nothing wrong with a little spring cleaning, let's get to it!
